Panel infill

Depending upon the date of construction and what resources were available locally, the panels of historic buildings, were traditionally made up of a variety of materials. Such as wattle and daub, lath and daub or lath and plaster. Bricks, stone, cob or flint.

However, in more recant times. panel infill may have been changed to incorporate modern materials, in particular impervious renders, mortars and paints. Or have been wholly replaced, with straw board and render, clinker block and render or modern hard bricks with cement pointing.

We can help you to understand the composition of your homes panels and determine the best course of general maintenance.

re-pointing

Historically, all pointing was done in feeble lime. This was both breathable and allowed for moisture transpiration, which prevented spalling of bricks or stone and decaying of structural timbers.

The modern use of impervious mortars and the addition of silicone sealants and plastic paints, need not become a major problem.

We can train you to spot potential problems in a timely manner, to rectify the simple ones and to be able to know when you need appropriate, professional help.
